Artist Statement

María is an Interdisciplinary Visual Artist who initiated her studies at the Universidad de Los Andes, in Merida, Venezuela and received her BA with Honors from the University of Washington in 2020. In 2022 María explored the world of textiles as a screen printing apprentice at the Fabric Workshop and Museum in Philadelphia. In 2023 she received the Pratt/Seattle Print Arts grant, which allowed her to create large scale paper screen prints for her first solo show Mi Jardín.

In her art, María recreates surreal landscapes that exaggerate and evoke elements of the Venezuelan flora and fauna that were an essential part of the world where she grew up. Through her art, María attempts to portray different realities that coexist in her home country Venezuela while she attempts to connect from afar with her homeland.

In Seattle, María shares her passion for art with others, teaching Screen Printing classes at Pratt Fine Arts Center.
